Higher Education

The wife and I were riding the H"EL"L (haven't been on CTA in rush hour in a couple of years) up to Wrigley last night to take in the Cubs-Astros game and we get to the Fullerton stop with a further influx of people--including two DePaul students. So, I'm standing there with the rest of festering humanity on the train and overhear the students' conversation:

"I just can't stand these Cubs fans. They are so rude and racist. I just can't believe all the racist comments they make. They should have a separate train just for the Cubs fans."

So I said, "Excuse me, but I couldn't help but overhear you talking. Let me get this straight, you support marginalizing a general group of people based on superficial characteristics, in this instance claimed affiliation to a baseball organizaion, to the point of segregation because you think they are "racist". I may be confused, but it seems to me that racism and elitism are born from the same foundation, no?

Response...blink, blink....blink, blink.

We left and fortunately still made the early bird special.

Tom Lehrer summed it all up in his introduction to "National Brotherhood Week" when he said:

I know there are some people in this world who do not love their fellow man and I hate people like that.

I tend to chalk it up to the fact that college students are generally braying assbags. They are all knowing, superior, and pompass. Then they graduate, get a job, and the world beats them back into reality... unless they can't find work. Then they add bitter to the list and are lost forever into a sea of liberal guilt mixed with near violent hate spewed at anyone who strongly disagrees with them.

As an image, think of a scruffy twenty three year old guy, standing in the street with a band of compadres screaming at a complete strager because they happen to disagree with... fill in the blank... (G8, World Bank, Iraq War, Jesus, etc...)

Great game btw, you could see Nick and I on the replay of the Zambrano homerun.... and since being on TV is all important in today's world... I thought I'd bring that up.

You guys should've come down to the bar for a drink after... Savy met us out there.
